El mundo estudia español. Edición especial

This special edition was created to mark the 10th anniversary of the Unit for Education Abroad, part of the Spanish Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports.

The publication highlights the unit’s role in promoting Spanish language and culture internationally, reaching over two million people across more than 40 countries. It showcases a broad network of educational centers, programs, and teaching staff, supporting both the teaching of Spanish abroad and the education of Spanish nationals living overseas.

Role

Editorial designer of the publication, with full creative direction. Developed a fresh and flexible visual approach that moved away from traditional institutional layouts, introducing a more dynamic and contemporary tone.

Main Challenge

Due to technical constraints, the entire project was designed in Canva instead of standard Adobe tools. It required the adaptation of editorial workflows to a non-traditional environment while maintaining print-quality standards.

Results

A distinctive editorial piece that was well received by stakeholders and recognized for breaking away from traditional institutional aesthetics. The publication was presented alongside the standard edition at an official event at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reinforcing its institutional relevance and visibility.

Specifications

202-page A5 publication designed for both print and digital formats. Delivered final artwork and print proofs, including cover iterations developed in collaboration with multiple departments. Worked closely with editors throughout the process to ensure alignment between content and design.

Title set in Montserrat for a clean, contemporary hierarchy, contrasted with Inria Serif for body text to enhance readability for the print version of the content.

A 60–30–10 color distribution was used to establish visual hierarchy: a dominant neutral base, a secondary supporting tone for structure, and a bold accent color for emphasis and navigation.
